Although the days of our little ones cooking meals for us may be a good few years off, there’s no harm in training them early!
As the lockdown continues, we’re on a mission to help you keep your kids entertained. Along with our weekly Colour Me Happy initiative, we’re sharing some of our favourite recipes for all your budding Nigella Lawson’s and (hopefully less sweary) Gordon Ramsey’s to help build up their confidence in the kitchen and create some fun, delicious meals.
Who doesn’t love pizza?
Follow this recipe from Tesco Real Food and let the kids’ imaginations run wild with whatever toppings they like. We won’t judge if you add Pineapple!
4 flour tortilla wraps
6 tsp tomato purée
100g (4oz) mozzarella
1 - Preheat the oven to gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C. Grease a 12-hole muffin tin.
2 - Using a 7cm (3in) biscuit cutter, stamp out 12 rounds from the flour tortilla wraps.
3 - Spread each round with 1/2 tsp tomato purée and pop one in each hole.
4 - Cut the mozzarella into cubes and divide between the shells and let the kids add whatever extra toppings they want.
5 - Bake for 10 minutes, or until melted and golden.
As well as doing amazing work for a very worthwhile cause, the Rainbow Trust also came up with this cracking omelette recipe (pun intended!). It’s a great way to get lots of healthy vegetables into your child’s meal.
1 tsp olive oil
½ red pepper
2 spring onions
1 small carrot
2 tbs sweetcorn
50g cheddar cheese
3 large eggs
1 - Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4. Line a muffin tin with six silicone or paper cupcake cases.
2 - Warm the olive oil in a pan, then gently cook the pepper and spring onions for a couple of minutes until starting to soften. Take off the heat and add the grated carrot and sweetcorn.
3 - Break the eggs into a large bowl and whisk until frothy. Add all of the vegetables and the grated cheese to the eggs. Stir until combined.
4 - Spoon the mixture into the cupcake cases. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes until cooked through and golden.
Are the kids craving dessert? This recipe from Delish is both naughty and nice! Swap out the dough for healthy apples and then challenge the kids to make the toppings as colourful as they can.
340g (12oz) cream cheese
2 tsp honey
1/2 c. melted chocolate
2 drops natural pink food colouring
1 - Divide cream cheese among three small bowls. In one bowl, add 1 teaspoon honey. In another bowl, add melted chocolate. In the last bowl, add remaining 1 teaspoon honey and natural pink food colouring. Stir each bowl together until combined.
2 - Slice apples and use a biscuit or cookie cutter to hollow out centres.
3 - Spread mixtures on apple slices and top with sprinkles.
Once you’ve finished cooking, it may be a good time to teach the kids how to do the washing up as well!
